History of an emblematic Ardennes club.
The origins of football in Sedan (1919-1947)
The Sedan Ardennes Sports Club (CSSA) finds its roots in theSedan-Torcy Athletic Union (UAST), founded on November 2, 1919. This creation results from the merger between two local clubs: Racing Club Sedanais and Stade Sedanais. The initiative is led by Marcel Schmitt, high school teacher, who wishes to structure the practice of football in the city of Sedan.
At its beginnings, the club played on a rudimentary field called the Bead, located in the Torcy district. This ground, without stands or lawn, is gradually being developed. In 1926, locker rooms were built, and in 1936, the stadium was renamed Émile-Albeau, in homage to the former mayor of Sedan.
Sportingly, the UAST is progressing slowly but surely.
In 1932, she joined the Division of Honor, the highest regional level. During the Second World War, despite the difficulties linked to the occupation and restrictions, the club maintained a sporting activity, participating in local and regional competitions.
The Dugauguez Era and professional rise (1947-1966)
The post-war period marked a decisive turning point in the history of the club. THE Laurant brothers, industrialists at the head of Sedanese Draperies, take charge of the destiny of the club.
They establish an original model of working-class footballers, where the players are employees of the factory while playing under a sports contract.
This system helps build player loyalty and guarantees economic stability.
In 1948, the club recruited Louis Dugauguez as a coach.
Former RC Lens player, Dugauguez imposes rigorous discipline, intense physical preparation and an innovative tactical vision.
Under his leadership, the club experienced a meteoric rise.
In 1949, Sedan reached the quarter-finals of the French Cup, a remarkable performance for an amateur club. In 1951, he won the French amateur championship, which allowed him to achieve professional status in 1953.
The following years were marked by a series of successes.
In 1956, the CSSA wins its first French Cup, beating AS Troyes in the final. In 1961, he did it again by winning against Nîmes Olympique.
These victories allow the club to participate in the European Cup Winners' Cup, where he notably faces Atlético Madrid.
The Émile-Albeau stadium then became an emblematic place, welcoming up to 18,000 spectators during major meetings.
The CSSA has established itself as a major player in French football.
Merger, instability and decline (1966-1997)
In 1966, in an attempt to revive, the CSSA merged with the Racing Club of Paris, giving birth to RC Paris-Sedan.
This merger, although strategic, does not produce the expected effects.
The club is struggling to find a common identity and sporting results are stagnating.
In 1970, the club took back its historic name of Sedan Ardennes Sports Club, then briefly becomes CS Sedan Mouzon Ardennes between 1974 and 1976, following a new merger with the Mouzon club.
These successive changes reflect a period of instability.
Sportingly, the CSSA has its ups and downs. It alternates between Division 1 and the Division 2, without managing to establish themselves permanently in the elite.
Financial difficulties accumulated, and the Émile-Albeau stadium, which had become dilapidated, no longer met the requirements of modern football.
Despite everything, the club maintains a loyal supporter base and a strong regional identity. It remains a symbol of popular football, rooted in the Ardennes.
Renewal and professionalization (1997-2013)
At the end of the 1990s, the CSSA began a sporting revival.
Under the leadership of ambitious leaders, the club regains League 2, then accesses the League 1.
In 1999, he reached the final of the League Cup, a performance that leaves a lasting impression.
At the same time, the club inaugurated 2000 THE Louis Dugauguez stadium, in homage to the iconic coach.
This modern stadium, with a capacity of more than 23,000 places, symbolizes the new ambitions of the club.
However, this period is also marked by unstable management.
Frequent changes of management, hazardous recruitment and economic difficulties weaken the project.
Despite a few promising seasons, CSSA failed to establish itself sustainably in League 1.
In 2013, the club is relegated sportingly and placed in judicial liquidation. He leaves the professional world, putting an end to an era marked by high but poorly controlled ambitions.
Reconstruction and repeated crises (2013-2025)
After its liquidation, the CSSA starts again honor division, then in National 3. Despite restructuring efforts, the club is struggling to regain its former glory.
It evolves in the amateur divisions, while maintaining a strong regional identity.
In 2023, a news judicial liquidation hits the club, while it evolves in National 1.
This sudden fall leads to a demotion in Regional 3 Grand Est, the lowest regional level. The CSSA must then rebuild its sporting and institutional project.
Despite these setbacks, the club managed to come back Regional 1 for the season 2025-2026, demonstrating remarkable resilience.
It is now chaired by François Mandra, who succeeds Daniel Guérin and coached by Elise Bussaglia, former French international.
This appointment marks a desire to modernize and professionalize the project.
Identity, culture and heritage
The CSSA is nicknamed “The Wild Boars”, in reference to the emblematic animal of the Ardennes.
This nickname embodies combativeness, tenacity and attachment to the Ardennes land.
