National Archeology Days 2017

The 2017 edition of the National Archeology Days will take place on June 16, 17 and 18.

The National Archeology Days have become a traditional meeting place for lovers of this discipline.

The event, set up under the patronage of the National Institute for Research in Preventive Archeology (Inrap), is organized this year in Charleville-Mézières and Sedan, with the partnership of the Ardennes Center for Archaeological Research (CARA), the Caeroesi reconstruction troop and the exceptional participation of the European research center Bibracte.

On Friday June 16, the inaugural day is focused on welcoming the school public, to whom the Ardennes Museum is offering this year two activities led by CARA (Mends the broken mess!) and by the Caeroesi (Discover the daily life of the Gauls). These activities are free and combined to alternately accommodate half-groups of approximately 15 students for a total duration of 1 hour per class (from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the morning and from 1:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the afternoon / reservation required at 03.24.32.44.75 or at the address reservations.musees@mairie-charlevillemezieres.fr).

In the afternoon, from 1:30 p.m., a first series of three conferences will be given by three researchers associated with the Bibracte center, in the Treasures room of the Château fort de Sedan museum: 2 p.m.: Vincent Guichard (The two lives of Bibracte); 2:40 p.m.: Fanny Martin (The end of the Iron Age and the transition with the Gallo-Roman period in current Belgium: recent research among the Atuatuques, the Condruses and the Eburons); 3:20 p.m.: Maxence Pieters (The lithic tools of Bibracte: a reference corpus for the Gallic period).

On Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m., the large Caeroesi camp will be open to the public in the garden of the Ardennes Museum.

There will be the workshops of the blacksmith, the bronze worker, the dyer, the weaver, the potter etc.

From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., CARA will offer its Repair the Broken Pots workshop to everyone, free of charge and without prior registration! which aims to discover the work of the ceramologist during an often overlooked and yet essential phase of the archaeologist's work: post-excavation, which allows the interpretation of data collected in the field.

Le samedi après-midi, alors que le village gaulois continuera à accueillir les nombreux visiteurs attendus (l’année dernière, plus de 700 personnes se sont déplacées pour venir les rencontrer !), aura lieu dans l’auditorium du musée de l’Ardenne une seconde série de conférences animées d’une part by des chercheurs associés au center of Bibracte :
2:00 p.m.: Jean-Paul Guillaumet (The creation of the European archaeological center of Mont Beuvray); 2:40 p.m.: Andrea Fochesato (Wooden architecture in the Gallic era based on the example of Bibracte); 3:20 p.m.: Maxence Pieters (The workshops of the Champlain sector: Côme Chaudron in Bibracte) and on the other hand, at 4:00 p.m., by Inrap archaeologists Bruno Duchêne and Isabelle Le Goff (Gallo-Roman funerary rituals at Châtelet-sur-Sormonne).

To end this day in style, a procession will leave the museum at 5:00 p.m. and cross Place Ducale to reach the Ile du Vieux-Moulin where an offering ceremony will take place. Meuse under the direction of the Druid of the Caeroesi.

On Sunday June 18, the large Caeroesi encampment will be in motion from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to show visitors the artisanal techniques of the 3rd century BC: pottery, dyeing, blacksmithing, foundry, weaving, etc.

At 10:30 a.m., Jean-Pierre Lémant will lead a tour of the museum rooms dedicated to the Late Roman Empire, to the medieval period and in particular to the site of the Castle of the Fairies of Montcy-Notre-Dame, the opportunity to return to the genesis of the scenography of these rooms.

Finally, like the day before, a procession will leave the museum at 5:00 p.m. to make an offering to the Meuse and begin under the best auspices the year which separates us from the next Archeology Days!
