Ardennes legend: The Nutons are back

They would be back on the heights of Fromelennes.

Nutons are these famous creatures whose legends and stories are very present in the Ardennes.

They are recognized for their manual talents and their skill, which once earned them the recognition of the villagers, but their anger was feared if they were played with.

Return of the Nutons

Many stories say that they disappeared from our countryside a few decades ago for reasons that are not always very clear.

This is how a few enthusiasts perpetuated their memories in folklore, literature and popular culture.

Nevertheless, testimonies have recently been pouring in that they are back on the heights of Fromelennes

Nutons are the Ardennes equivalent of elves or gnomes: they are small, stocky beings with marvelous powers, often benevolent but quite touchy, it must be said. Their name comes from the old Walloon, precisely from the term “el nût”, at night, because it is at this time that they are mainly active. Like the dwarves in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", the Nutons live in caverns and caves that the villagers sometimes nicknamed "Nuton holes". For us, this “Nutons hole” is the famous Nichet cave in Fromelennes.
